Medical care and procedures for a wide range of adult and childhood kidney problems.
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Treatment
CKD is long-term kidney damage that can progress through several stages. Care is aimed at identifying the cause, monitoring kidney function, controlling contributing conditions and slowing further damage.
Hemodialysis
Hemodialysis filters waste and excess fluid from the blood when kidney function is inadequate. Care includes dialysis planning, vascular access planning and individualized prescriptions, including advanced renal replacement strategies for critically ill patients when required.
Kidney Transplantation
Kidney transplantation can be considered for eligible patients with advanced, irreversible kidney failure. Evaluation and follow-up include both donor and recipient considerations and management of transplant-related risk.
Kidney Biopsy
A renal biopsy removes a very small sample of kidney tissue for microscopic examination. It may help clarify diagnosis, disease severity, prognosis, treatment response or problems affecting a transplanted kidney.
Vascular Access Planning
Reliable vascular access is essential for hemodialysis. Planning may involve temporary dialysis catheters or longer-term access such as an AV fistula or graft.
Hypertension
High blood pressure can both contribute to kidney disease and result from it. Management combines appropriate medication with attention to diet, activity and other modifiable risk factors.
Peritoneal Dialysis
Peritoneal dialysis uses the lining of the abdomen as a filter. Treatment planning includes catheter placement, initiation and patient/family training so treatment can often be performed outside hospital.
